Stamping Curling Edge

This short video shows a stamping operation used to form a curled edge on a sheet metal component. During the process, dedicated tooling gradually bends the edge into a rounded profile while controlling its radius and alignment.

How Sheet Metal Edge Curling Works

Edge curling turns an exposed sheet metal edge back toward the part to create an open or closed curl. Compared with an unfinished cut edge, the rounded profile is easier to handle and can provide additional stiffness along the edge of the component.

The final result depends on the material thickness, ductility, curl diameter and tooling design. Consistent die positioning and controlled deformation are needed to reduce cracking, distortion and excessive springback.
